Westhampton’s Owen Jessup Wins Section XI Golf Title

This year’s Section XI Boys Golf Individual Championships offered an exciting two days of competition.

We had an extra playoff between Riverhead’s Colby Baran and Westhampton’s Owen Jessup, where Jessup prevailed and was crowned this year’s champion golfer in Section XI.

There was a three-way tie for the 10th alternate spot between Mount Sinai’s Jaxon Caruso, Southampton’s Ethan Heur, and Easthampton’s Nico Horan-Puglia. Caruso prevailed after a two-hole playoff to determine 10th place alternate for states.  In June, the top nine finishers will go to states at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

West Islip’s Patrick Cantwell Wins World Series

West Islip native and Texas Rangers’ bullpen catcher Patrick Cantwell is a World Series champion!

A three-year captain at West Islip, he helped the Lions win a Suffolk County championship in 2008.

At Stony Brook, he holds the record for the most career games played and was selected in the third round by the Rangers in the 2012 MLB Draft.

He spent eight seasons in the minor leagues, making it as high as Triple-A before transitioning to the bullpen role in 2021.

Travis Jankowski, a fellow Stony Brook alumnus, also won a World Series with the Rangers. He is not a Section XI native and grew up in Pennsylvania.
