The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) held its quarterly meeting of its Executive Committee in Saratoga Springs on Thursday, October 10. The Committee voted on several key proposals important to the Association’s 788-member schools.
A proposal to conduct the NYSPHSAA and Federation individual wrestling championships as one tournament was approved. Eight places in all weight classes will be recognized with medals. Sections are now required to use the InBody scale for the NYSPHSAA weight certification program. A waiver was approved in the sport of wrestling to waive the NFHS five bout rule in the post season. This will allow competitors to wrestle a sixth bout during individual postseason tournaments.
The Executive Committee approved the use of metal cleats at all levels of play in the sport of softball, excluding modified. The international tie breaker rule was eliminated in the sport of softball starting in 2020 for all regional games. The baseball proposal to adopt the game-ending run rule procedure with section and league approval was approved. A game will end when there is a 10-run differential after 5 innings, or 4 ½ if the home team is winning.
The committee approved a proposal in the sports of boys and girls swimming and diving that a minimum of five officials be required in an 11-dive dual meet to qualify for the state championship. The rule takes effect for boys swimming and diving in the 2019-20 school year. In girls swimming and diving it takes effect in 2020-21 school year.
The boys soccer regional rotation was approved that will begin in the fall of 2020 and continue until the 2025 season. Mark Twain Golf Course was accepted as the host of the boys golf championships in 2020-2022.
The meeting was called to order by President Paul Harrica at 9:00 am with adjournment at 11:50am. The next meeting of the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee will be February 7, 2020 at the Embassy Suites in Saratoga.
