Section XI Alumni: Coan Leads Wisconsin in Pinstripe Bowl

Sayville native Jack Coan put together a lasting memory as he led Wisconsin to a 35-3 victory over Miami in this year’s Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.

The sophomore opened the game with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kendric Taylor and the Badgers never let up. He also ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Coan played in five games this year, going 56 of 93 for 515 yards and he threw for five touchdowns and three interceptions.

Ward Melville Coaches Petrucci, Negus Honored

It’s been a good month for Ward Melville coaches Lou Petrucci and Jay Negus. Both took home top honors in their respective sports.

The New York Hot Stove League of Professional Baseball Scouts has named Lou Petrucci the 2019 recipient of the Steve Lembo Memorial Award for meritorious service to the national pastime at the amateur level.

Coach Petrucci will be a part of the dais that in the past has honored Willie Randolph, Steven Matz, John Flaherty and Dellin Betances just to name a few of the Major League players.  Coach Petrucci was selected by a committee that represents more than eight states in the Northeast area.  The 54th annual dinner will be held at Leonard’s of Great Neck on Jan. 25, 2019.

At the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association “Prep School Lacrosse Showcase”, Negus was presented with his 2018 Coach of the Year Award.

In 2018, the 21-1, Ward Melville lacrosse team won its second consecutive Class A, New York State Championship. This was Negus’ fifth season at the helm of the Patriots.  The Ward Melville graduate, has compiled a 88-16 overall record since taking over in 2014.

Section XI Pays Tribute to Robert H. Young

Robert H. Young, 92, of Hendersonville, NC passed away, Friday, November 30, 2018 at the Pardee Hospital, NC.  Born in Southold, NY, he was a son of the late Marguerite Howell and William Emmett Young.  He was also preceded in death by brothers, William Emmett Young, Jr., John Donald Young and sisters, Priscilla Lyndes and Phoebe Cushman.

Robert graduated from Southold High School and continued his education earning a B.S.E. from Cortland State Teacher’s College in 1949, a M.S.E. from Hofstra University in 1953, and a Director’s Certificate from New York University in 1960.

After graduation from High School, Robert entered military service in the US Army Air Corps, serving with valor and distinction as a Radio Gunner.  Following graduation from Cortland State Teacher’s College, Robert began devoting a lifetime toward tapping resources of youth as a Recreation Director for the Suffolk County Second Supervisory BOCES in 1949-1950.  Robert then became the Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation for the Island Trees Public Schools in Levittown, NY  from 1960-1965.  For the next 16 years, until his retirement in 1981, Robert served as the District Supervisor of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Athletics, and Health Services for the South Huntington Union Free School District.  Following this tenure, Robert served in an administrative capacity for NYS Public High School Athletic Association, Section XI.

Robert gave his energy, talent and acumen to many professional affiliations and activities to include NYSAPHER, AAHPERD, Section VIII and Section XI committees, Special Olympics, March of Dimes, and the South Huntington Teen Center.  In 1984, Robert was inducted to the Cortland “C” Club Hall of Fame. In 1987, Robert and his late wife of 68 years, Audrie Thomas Young, retired to Etowah, NC.

He is survived by two daughters, Robin Young Sears and husband Peter, of Woodstock, NY, Cynthia Young Sadrakula and husband Michael, of Bedford, NY and Flat Rock, NC, and two grandaughters, Taylor Young Sears and Elizabeth Lee Sadrakula. Additionally, many nieces and nephews survive.

The family will receive friends in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home, Hendersonville, NC on Friday, December 7, 2018 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.  A service of remembrance will be held at 4:00pm.

A celebration of life and interment in the Cutchogue, NY cemetery will take place in the Spring of 2019.

Northport’s Chloe Stepanek Named Section XI Top Female Athlete of Fall

Record after record, event after event, Northport’s Chloe Stepanek was a star yet again this year. And she’s only a junior!

Stepanek won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle, while being named the most outstanding swimmer at the NYSPHSAA swimming and diving championships.

For her efforts, she is also now the most outstanding female in Section XI for the fall season.
