High risk sports are back in action in New York state, and that also means the return of Special Olympics Unified Sports.

“A Unified team is, half the students on the team have a disability, and half the students do not,” Special Olympics New York President and SEO Stacey Hengsterman said. “And they play together.”

Reminder: Spectators Are Restricted from Section XI Events

Section XI is excited that sports are back.

During its most recent meeting, the Section XI Athletic Council, in conjunction with the Section XI Executive Board, the committee voted to approve high risk sports for high school competition following the Suffolk County Department of Health guidelines. They also voted to deny all modified winter sports, which includes early and late winter activities. The committee continued to restrict ALL spectators from winter contests.

“Due to safety concerns outlined by the Suffolk County Department of Health and physicians on our safety committee, having no spectators at contests will give us the best chance for schools to complete their upcoming seasons,” said Tom Combs, Executive Director of Section XI. “The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff are paramount in this endeavor of returning to play.”

You can find schedules and standings on SectionXI.org and follow updates @SectXISuffolk via social media. Many local districts will stream events on their platforms and Section XI will aim to share many of these links on its website and social media channels in the coming weeks.

“We wish each student-athlete, coach, trainer, official and program the best of luck as competition begins,” said Combs.
