Four More SWR Baseball Numbers Retired
Shoreham-Wading River baseball added to its growing list of retired numbers at a ceremony in early August.
Former players Brian Morrell (23), Mike O’Reilly (23) and Tyler Osik (15), and former coach Ray Maccagli (00) received the high honor.
There are now 13 numbers retired in Wildcats’ history.
Osik plays for the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Morrell plays at Hofstra University. O’Reilly played four years in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization. Maccagli coached in SWR for 40 years.
Section XI Fall Season Begins on August 22
The Section XI fall season begins on August 22 for all varsity and JV teams.
All students trying out for teams must have a sport physical and parent/ guardian permission form.

NYSAAA Hosts New AD Conference
Representatives from every NYSPHSAA section attended the first New Athletic Director (AD) Conference organized by the New York State Athletic Administrators Association.
Section XI ADs were instrumental in the formation of the conference, which will serve as an important moment of professional development as they start their administrative journey in athletics, health and physical education.

Section XI Schools Named NYSPHSAA Schools of Distinction and Excellence Winners
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. (NYSPHSAA) announces its 2021-22 Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction and School of Excellence Award winners.
The purpose of the School of Distinction and School of Excellence Awards are to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide academic honor. This year, 86 schools earned the School of Distinction Award and 148 schools earned the School of Excellence Award.
Schools can apply for School of Distinction status by having 100% of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their respective sports seasons. To earn the School of Excellence Award, 75% of a school’s varsity teams must qualify and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award.
The School of Distinction winners will be presented a certificate and a commemorative award at their local athletic director workshop this fall. The School of Excellence winners will be awarded a plaque at their local athletic director workshop.
For schools to be eligible to receive these prestigious awards, schools must submit an application following the Spring Scholar-Athlete submission each school year.

Jim McGowan Inducted to NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame

McGowan was the longtime softball coach at Bay Shore High School.
Recap of Day Two of the NYSPHSAA Central Committee Meeting
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) concluded the 99th meeting of the Central Committee on Wednesday, July 27th. The Committee voted on several key proposals important to the Association’s 787-member schools during Wednesday’s meeting.
Representatives of the 11 sections approved the sports of boys basketball, girls basketball, boys soccer, girls soccer, baseball, softball and girls volleyball to begin competing in a sixth classification starting in the 2023-24 school year.
The Committee approved abiding by the NFHS, national governing body, jewelry rule for all sports. The sport of football had two more proposals approved (two were approved on Tuesday). Today, using the NFHS rules for 8-man football with waivers and NYSPHSAA specific rules was approved for implementation starting in the fall of 2022. The classification cut off numbers for the sport of football were also approved for the 2023 season, the numbers can be found on page 104 of the agenda.
The NYSPSHAA Strategic Plan for 2022-27 was approved by the Central Committee. The strategic plan will focus on increasing student participation, diversity, equity and inclusion, officials recruitment and retention, and long-term financial stability of the Association.
The Central Committee meeting will conclude with the induction of the NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2022. The class is made up of Fred Ahart (Administrator, Section IX), Jim Amen, Jr. (Coach/Administrator, Section VIII), Maria DeCristoforo (Official, Section VIII), Dennis Fries (Administrator, Section V), Molly Huddle (Athlete, Section IV), and Jim McGowan (Coach, Section XI).
The next meeting of the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee will be on Wednesday, October 19th at Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs.
