ICYMI: Recap of NYSPHSAA Exec Committee Meeting

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) held its quarterly Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, January 31, at the Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs. The following key points were discussed and voted on that will be implemented for the regular and championship season for the 787 membership schools.

Nine championship sites were voted on during the meeting including the approval of Boys Basketball moving to Binghamton from 2025-27. Additionally in the winter, the Skiing State Championships were approved to go to Gore Mountain/North Creek Bowl (2025), Whiteface Mountain/Mount Hoevenberg (2026) and Bristol Mountain/Harriet Hollister State Park (2027) as part of a rotation. Two spring championship sites were also approved. Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton will host the 2025-2027 Softball State Championships and Hobart & William Smith Colleges will host the Boys Lacrosse State Finals from 2025-27. In the fall, Hudson Valley Community College was approved as the host site of the Game Day Cheer State Championships from 2024-26.

Numerous proposals were brought forward to expand state championships including two volleyball proposals.  A two-day Boys Volleyball State Championship was approved which includes every section now having representation at the state tournament. The girls volleyball state committee presented a proposal for a three-day tournament now that they have begun to compete in six classes. That item will be voted on at the May 1st meeting.

Both indoor and outdoor track presented proposals for expansion as well. Indoor Track had its proposal approved to add a second division for the relays at state championships. Outdoor Track & Field had its lone proposal approved to move to a third class starting in the 2025 spring season.

Two tennis proposals were brought forward including both girls and boys starting a 2 singles, 3 doubles format for their events starting in 2024. This was approved while a second proposal, to move all boys and girls tennis championship events (team and individual), was introduced and will be voted on in May.

Two football proposals were presented, including an additional official for state semifinals and finals. The item will be voted on May 1st at the next Executive Committee meeting.

The Safety Committee had one proposal approved. To provide safer guidelines during inclement weather for outdoor sports, the MyLightning Tracker app was approved for implementation in 2024.

From the modified to the varsity level, rule revisions in various sports were approved, including the experimental use of a shot clock in boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, as well as approving metal cleats for modified softball.

The Winter 2024 NYSPHSAA Executive Committee will be held Wednesday, May 1st, at Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs.

Celebrating National Girls & Women in Sports Day

February 7, 2024, marks the 38th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).

This celebration inspires girls and women to play, be active, and realize their full power.

The confidence, strength, and character gained through sports participation are the tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life.

Section XI honors the achievements of girls and women in sports and continues to acknowledge the power of sports to unlock limitless potential.

We applaud the vital role played by the individuals and organizations who join us in championing this effort: advocates seeking to protect Title IX and advance gender equity, athletes using their platform to inspire greatness, and coaches working daily to promote play.

We invite you to celebrate NGWSD in your community!

NYSPHAA’s Todd Nelson to Receive the NFHS Citation Award

Todd Nelson, who has served as assistant director of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for the past 16 years, has been selected as the NFHS Citation Award honoree by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Congrats, Todd!

His primary responsibilities include overseeing safety and research, sportsmanship, classification of schools, sanctioning, professional development, rule book publications, handbook updates, eligibility interpretations, championship program content, and the wrestling weight certification program.

Nelson is also currently leading the implementation of girls’ flag football and girls’ wrestling as championship sports for the NYSPHSAA, and he also oversees cheerleading.

Nelson’s main focus and passion, however, is Unified Sports. In his 16 years as assistant director, Nelson has worked closely with Special Olympics in New York. Nelson’s diligent work has made Unified Sports part of more than 300 NYSPHSAA member schools. Due to his work with Special Olympics, Nelson obtained a master’s degree (physical education with a concentration in adapted PE) from the State University of New York (SUNY)-Cortland. He also obtained a NYS Certification in school administration.

Before his time with the NYSPHSAA, Nelson was an athletic administrator for the Waterville, New Hartford, and Herkimer Central School Districts for 14 years. He has also been the boy’s vice president of NYSPHSAA Section III for over five years.

Section XI Mourns Passing of Rich LoNigro, Founder of Port Jeff Sporting Goods

Section XI is sad to learn about the passing of Rich LoNigro, the founder and longtime owner and operator of Port Jeff Sporting Goods. He was 81.

LoNigro started the business in 1971 and it was built into one of the top ten privately owned sporting goods companies in the United States.  In 2018, Port Jefferson Sporting Goods was acquired by BSN Sporting Goods, and Rich got to fulfill his lifelong dream to spend every waking moment with his family and his beloved grandchildren.

LoNigro was instrumental in founding St. Gerard’s Baseball and Soccer intramural programs and the Terryville Soccer Travel league, which combined have benefited thousands of young local athletes and are still flourishing today.

Throughout his life, Richie was honored in many ways.  In 1984, Hope House Ministries and Father Frank Pizzarelli recognized him as Man of the Year.  In 2000, Richie was honored as The Man of The Year by the Suffolk County Police Athletic League (PAL).

Richie was also nationally recognized by Rawlings Sporting Goods Company as a “Silver Glove” recipient, a rare honor bestowed on only a select few in the sporting goods industry.  In 2006, Richie was inducted into the New York State USSSA (Softball) Hall of Fame for his dedication as an outstanding player and business relationship. He was also inducted into the St. Anthony’s High School Hall of Fame.

Richie was on the original Board of Directors of the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame.  In 2016, he was honored with a special recognition award.  At this award banquet, with all of his family there, he said, “I own a business that makes trophies, and trophies are things we are all very proud of.  I brought all of my trophies with me tonight, and they are sitting out there in the audience.  These are my trophies and awards; I take them wherever I go”.

Richard was pre-deceased by his parents, Angelo and Rose, Brothers Joseph, Frank, Phillip and Steven, daughter Trisha Ann and son Matthew (Julia).  He is survived by his amazing wife Priscilla of 62 years who was the absolute love of his life, Richard Jr., Robert (Amy), Michael (Angela), Craig (Kristin), Kevin (Kim), Keira (Robert), Koren(Tim), Paul(Donna), Shauna(Robert), Brianne(Nicholas).  He was also survived by his amazing 26 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
