Sayville Basketball Team Picks Up the Dinner Tab with William Floyd High School Team in Memory of Late Coach

The Sayville High School varsity boys’ basketball team recently treated their William Floyd High School counterparts to dinner in honor of William Floyd’s late Coach, Darrel Sumpter. The two teams shared a pasta dinner as a gesture of sportsmanship and unity between the schools.

The event, organized by Sayville Booster Club’s Laura Skelly and Floyd Coach Will Slinkoski, occurred following Floyd’s game against Brentwood on January 27. The Sayville team arrived first, leaving room for the Floyd players at their tables. The meal, provided by the Sayville Booster Club, was a tribute to Coach Darrel Sumpter, who tragically passed away in a car accident in December.

The Sayville players wanted to support the Floyd team, many of whom they have competed with for years through CYO and travel basketball leagues on Long Island. In these leagues, the Sayville players had come to know Coach Sumpter, whose impact was felt long before high school competition.

“This dinner was the true essence of sportsmanship in action,” said Sayville Director of Athletics Dr. Ryan Cox. “Our boys’ basketball program, booster club, families, and school community demonstrated genuine empathy and compassion, coming together to honor Coach Sumpter’s memory. This gathering wasn’t just about basketball; it was a heartfelt celebration of our community’s strength and unity, reminding us that the game is a shared journey of resilience and friendship. The act itself demonstrated the character and values of our players and the greater Sayville community, and the values we look to instill in all our students in the Sayville School District.”

“I am so proud of each and every one of these boys,” said Dr. Marc Ferris, Superintendent of Schools for Sayville. “This is a perfect example of how our district’s mantra of caring and learning extends beyond the walls and halls of our Sayville school community.”

Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day

National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a vibrant movement we celebrate annually, which honors the achievements of girls and women in sports. It continues to Lead Her Forward by acknowledging the power of sports to unlock her limitless potential.

Advocating for effective policies to keep the women’s sports ecosystem strong has been a staple of NGWSD.

On the national day itself, February 5, Women Sports Foundation leadership, athletes, coaches, and sports industry leaders will be on Capitol Hill, holding meetings with Members of Congress and their staff to discuss a myriad of advocacy issues impacting girls and women in sports, and legislation needed to advance equal access and opportunity.

National Girls & Women in Sports Day® (NGWSD®) was co-founded by the Women’s Sports Foundation in 1987 as a special day in our nation’s capital to recognize women’s sports.

The day united premiere organizations and elite women athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports. In 1987, NGWSD also served as a remembrance of Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and dedication to promoting equality for women’s sports; Hyman died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986. NGWSD has since evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of girls and women in sports, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

NGWSD is powered by the Women’s Sports Foundation, supported by its team of champion athletes and celebrated throughout the year by schools and community-serving organizations across all 50 states. Learn more here, and follow the hashtag #NGWSD2025 on social media.

Section XI supports all the women who came before and the girls who play and coach today!
