Brentwood Celebrates Hoppey’s Legacy with Annual Event

Brentwood High School recently hosted the first Bob Hoppey High School Lacrosse Classic.

This particular day was about honoring the memory of the late great Hall of Fame coach, Bob Hoppey, while showcasing the game at two very distinct levels. The goal was to have eight vastly different lacrosse communities come together in order to grow the game, while allowing the participants to appreciate and admire their peers and other communities.

The day was truly a celebration of the character and commitment that Coach Hoppey had for the Brentwood community and lacrosse at-large.

Schools who participated were Brentwood, Deer Park, Riverhead, Northport, Smithtown East, Massapequa, East Meadow and Mattituck-Greenport-Southold.

Section XI Alums Named to Tewaaraton Watch List

A number of former Section XI student-athletes were recently named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List for 2018.

The lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the 2018 Tewaaraton Award.

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.

The following played high school lacrosse in Section XI member schools:

Women

  • Sam Apuzzo, Boston College, West Babylon
  • Samantha Giacalone, Notre Dame, Eastport-South Manor
  • Nicole Levy, Syracuse, East Islip
  • Courtney Murphy, Stony Brook, William Floyd

Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 22 and April 5. On April 26, the field will be narrowed to 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.

Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 10 and invited to the 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 31.

Suffolk to the Pros: Myles Jones

VICE Sports featured a story about him with the headline, “Myles Jones is the Future of Lacrosse.”

Jones wrote a story for The Players Tribune titled, “The Face of the Game.”

It’s clear that Myles Jones is on another level as an ambassador of his sport.

The first overall pick in the 2016 Major League Lacrosse Draft and Walt Whitman High School alum is truly one of the faces of lacrosse. From the U.S. Team, which he should be playing for at the World Championships this summer, to winning a National Championship at Duke, to his dominant play in the MLL, Jones is a star.

At Duke, he anchored the midfield for four years and put up more than 60 points in three of his four seasons with the Blue Devils. He also won the Lt. Donald MacLaughlin Jr. Award and was a Tewaaraton Finalist in 2015 and 2016.

In a four-year varsity career at Whitman, Jones recorded 272 points. He as an All-American in lacrosse, All-Long Island and 1,000-point scorer in basketball and All-County as a quarterback on the football team. He is one of the best pure three-sport athletes Suffolk County and Long Island has ever seen and he hasn’t even reached his prime in lacrosse yet.
