Savion Lewis Named Section XI Winter Male Athlete of the Year

As part of a new seasonal awards program through Section XI, Hills East’s Savion Lewis has been named as the athletic conference’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year.

This should come as no surprise since he was the best basketball player in the entire state. Crowned Mr. Basketball for New York, Lewis led his team to a Long Island championship and state runner-up designation.

Instead of telling his story to you, we also are debuting a new student-athlete essay platform with Lewis as our first person to share personal sentiments about their life and sport.

Congratulations to Savion and CLICK HERE to read his story!

Savion Lewis Named NYS Mr. Basketball

Hills East’s Savion Lewis was named New York’s Mr. Basketball for his outstanding play during the 2018 season.

Lewis, who is the all-time leading scorer in school history, led his team to a Long Island and Suffolk County title this year. Hills lost in the state finals this past weekend.

In the photo above, Lewis received his honor from BCANY President Todd Rose, NYS boys basketball coordinator Bob Mayo, and NYS basketball tournament director Ben Nelson.

Lewis will attend Division I Quinnipiac and is the first Suffolk County name to win the honor since Tobias Harris in 2010. Harris played at Hills West and is currently on the LA Clippers in the NBA.

On the same day that Lewis was honored, Hills East’s Shane Dean received the NYSPHSAA basketball sportsmanship award.

Amityville wins Class A NYS Basketball Title

They’re back! For the first time since 2003, Amityville boys basketball has won a New York State title. This marks the fifth one in school history.

The Warriors were led by tournament MVP, Josh Serrano, who had 29 points, six steals and five assists in the 74-54 victory against Ardsley at Floyd L. Maines Arena in Binghamton, N.Y.

Amityville is now 27-1 this season and will take its 19-game winning streak to the state Federation Tournament of Champions at Glens Falls next weekend against Park, the state CHSAA champion.

“It feels crazy. It’s my senior year and my last chance to win a championship. I wanted it badly,” Serrano told Newsday after the game. “This was a special game.”
