Section XI Schools Named NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Teams
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Inc. (NYSPHSAA) announces its fall 2021 scholar-athlete teams and number of scholar-athlete individuals per team.
For fall 2021, NYSPHSAA recognized 3,825 Scholar-Athlete teams. In addition, an impressive 48,023 students received individual scholar-athlete recognition by having an individual GPA of 90 or above, despite if their team qualified or not. A total of 625 schools across the state participated in the Scholar-Athlete program which honors schools each of the seasons there is interscholastic competition. The 625 participating schools represents 79% of the NYSPHSAA membership.
“Student-athletes in our member schools continue to prove they can successfully balance athletics and academics,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, Executive Director. “Over 48,000 student-athletes were recognized for their hard work, effort and determination in their sport and in the classroom and we applaud them for their achievement as Scholar-Athletes.”

The winter 2021-22 scholar-athlete submission period with begin on Monday, January 31st. Deadline to submit for the winter is Monday, March 14th.
Eden, Gomez Represent Section XI at All-American Game
On Friday, December 10, 2021, Brentwood’s Juan Gomez and coach Ron Eden represented Section XI at the 2021 Boys High School All American Game in Nashville, Tennessee .
Congratulations to Juan on an incredible career and tremendous honor on being named one of the 40 players across the United States to play in this game.
Coach Ron Eden was nominated to coach this year’s 2021 All American East team.
You both make us proud!
Walt Whitman Coach Honored by New York Jets
Walt Whitman head football coach Robin Rosa was named a Coach of the Week by the New York Jets in October.
This past weekend he was at the stadium to be recognized. He celebrated the honor with Oceanside head coach Rob Blount, who was also selected earlier this fall.
Rosa led the Wildcats to an undefeated season, Long Island championship and Rutgers Trophy.
Congrats, coach, on a historic season for your program!
Whitman’s Gianna Paul Named All-American
Walt Whitman senior Gianna Paul has been named a High School All American.
Paul is one of 70 female soccer players from across the U.S. to earn this prestigious honor. She is also the only from Suffolk County and one of two from Long Island.
DesLauriers Named Suffolk County Boys Volleyball Player of the Year
Eastport-South Manor’s Jake DesLauriers had an unbelievable volleyball season.
He led the Sharks to an undefeated state championship season and piled up the individual honors as well.
DesLauriers was named Suffolk County Player of the Year, Exceptional Senior, All-County, All-County Academic Team and County Tournament MVP.
WHB Soccer Honored with Sportsmanship Award
The Westhampton Beach boys soccer team was honored with the Sportsmanship Team Award by the Suffolk County Boys Soccer Coaches Association.

The Sayville Athletes Helping Others “Freezin’ for a Reason” Polar Plunge team raised $4,000 this year.
