NYSPHSAA Holds Quarterly Executive Committee Meeting

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) held its quarterly meeting of the Executive Committee on Wednesday, February 2nd at the Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs. The committee voted on several key proposals important to the Association’s 787-member schools.

The Executive Committee approved establishing criteria for the creation of a sixth classification for sports with 501 or more teams eligible to participate in the NYSPHSAA State Championships. Starting in the 2023-24 school year, the NYSPHSAA sports of baseball, softball, boys basketball, girls basketball, boys soccer and girls soccer are eligible for a sixth classification pending approval from each sport committee.

Following the sixth classification vote, the Executive Committee approved establishing a timeline, process and criteria for the classification cut-off numbers for non-variation five, four and three classification sports along with two-division sports. Both of these action items can be found starting on page 53 of the meeting agenda.

After lengthy discussion to address venue COVID restrictions by section representatives on the Executive Committee, a motion submitted by Section IV to limit attendance at the Competitive Cheerleading Championships at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to 400 or less was defeated by a 14-6 vote (2 abstentions).

Section VI made a motion to limit the attendance at the Boys Basketball Championships and Wrestling Championships to less than 5,000 was defeated by a 18-4 vote. The NYSPHSAA is subject to the New York State Department of Health guidance for Large Scale Indoor Events, which require vaccination/ testing for indoor events of more than 5,000.

The meeting was called to order by President Julie Bergman at 9:00 am and concluded at 1:21 pm. The next meeting of the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee will be Wednesday, May 4th at The Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs.

Section XI Participates in Jets Event for National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Student-athletes from Section XI took part in an event with the Jets and Nike in recognition of the 36th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

The purpose of the event was to promote opportunities for women in sports and Section XI was fortunate to be involved in the program.

Students from Amityville, Center Moriches, Longwood, North Babylon, Sachem East, Sachem North, Ward Melville and Walt Whitman were at MetLife Stadium for the event.
 
They received uniforms, private tours of the Jets locker room and attended panel discussions with notable women in sports.

Remembering Commack Baseball Coach Brian Bonin

Section XI is sad about the passing of Commack Baseball Coach Brian Bonin.

Bonin coached the varsity at Commack from 2017-2021 and had a career record of 73-21-1, winning two Suffolk County titles and the 2021 Long Island Conference I championship.

Bonin, 33, who taught physical education in the Commack, died Jan. 25, after a year-long battle with melanoma.

He is survived by his wife Lauren, daughters Ashlynn and Ella and son Luke, parents Joe and Lorraine, brother Joe and four nieces and nephews.

Bonin’s funeral is Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. St. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church in Deer Park.

Island Federal and Section XI Partner on Student-Athlete of Month Program

Please join us in congratulating the December Section XI-Island Federal student-athlete nominees!

*Naomi Chon of Half Hollow Hills had an excellent fencing season and career for the Cougars. She finished as the No. 1 Suffolk Epee Fencer and had an overall record of 19-2. In addition to her work on the strip, she participates in a cultural unity group called AASO and is a straight “A” student!

*Helena Roy of Center Moriches was a staple on the girls cross country team. Along with her blazing 5K times, she has a 99.73 GPA (👀!) and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate.

Both Naomi and Helena are now on the Section XI-Island Federal Scholar-Athlete Watch List and are in contention to receive our Scholar-Athlete Scholarship in June of 2022!
