Savion Lewis Named NYS Mr. Basketball

Hills East’s Savion Lewis was named New York’s Mr. Basketball for his outstanding play during the 2018 season.

Lewis, who is the all-time leading scorer in school history, led his team to a Long Island and Suffolk County title this year. Hills lost in the state finals this past weekend.

In the photo above, Lewis received his honor from BCANY President Todd Rose, NYS boys basketball coordinator Bob Mayo, and NYS basketball tournament director Ben Nelson.

Lewis will attend Division I Quinnipiac and is the first Suffolk County name to win the honor since Tobias Harris in 2010. Harris played at Hills West and is currently on the LA Clippers in the NBA.

On the same day that Lewis was honored, Hills East’s Shane Dean received the NYSPHSAA basketball sportsmanship award.

Amityville wins Class A NYS Basketball Title

They’re back! For the first time since 2003, Amityville boys basketball has won a New York State title. This marks the fifth one in school history.

The Warriors were led by tournament MVP, Josh Serrano, who had 29 points, six steals and five assists in the 74-54 victory against Ardsley at Floyd L. Maines Arena in Binghamton, N.Y.

Amityville is now 27-1 this season and will take its 19-game winning streak to the state Federation Tournament of Champions at Glens Falls next weekend against Park, the state CHSAA champion.

“It feels crazy. It’s my senior year and my last chance to win a championship. I wanted it badly,” Serrano told Newsday after the game. “This was a special game.”

Suffolk to the Pros: Marcus Stroman

One of the most recognizable players in baseball today, Marcus Stroman was just as charismatic and electric on the mound at Patchogue-Medford High School.

The Blue Jays ace was the 2017 World Baseball Classic MVP, helping the U.S. team win gold, and he won a Gold Glove Award in 2017 as the top defensive pitcher in the game.

Stroman stared at Duke University before being selected by the Blue Jays in the first round – 22nd overall – in the 2012 MLB Draft.

Through 2017 he has a 37-25 record with a 3.61 career earned run average.

His “Height Doesn’t Measure Heart” brand echoes his personal characteristics as  shorter pitcher with big heart.

Section XI Honoring International Women’s Day

March 8 is International Women’s day, and we’d love to pay tribute to the women who worked so hard in the early days of Section XI and Suffolk County high school sports.

There was a time prior to the existence of Title IX in 1972 where many women in the Suffolk County region fought very hard to make a difference, to coach, to win and impact the lives of student-athletes for decades to come.
