Before a scrimmage against Amityville, the Suffolk County Baseball Coaches Association honored legendary Coach Al Desiderio.
Coach Desi’s family and Port Jeff alumni were invited onto the field, and former coaches spoke about the lasting impact Coach Desi had on his players and fellow coaches.
The ceremony culminated with Coach Desi’s son, Ronny, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. It was a beautiful day to honor Coach Desi’s incredible legacy.
He was a business teacher and coach for the Port Jefferson School District from 1958 to 1995.
Coach Desi is the longest-tenured high school baseball coach in Suffolk County’s history, having coached at Port Jefferson for 37 years. He has coached his teams to over 400 wins, including 10 league championships and 20 playoff appearances.
He was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. Desi was also a professor of business management at Suffolk County Community College for over 40 years.
Always willing to help others, he was involved with the Miracle League of Long Island and helped bring the first softball team to Suffolk County for autistic and handicapped children.
Lax Out Cancer is an annual lacrosse fundraising event which recognizes local families who are battling cancer and raises money to help them fight.
It is run completely by volunteers. Lax Out Cancer began in 2009 when the Shoreham Wading River lacrosse community raised money for a family of a local child battling cancer.
This amazing fundraiser has become an annual event and every year it has attracted more attention, volunteers, and contributors. 5% of the proceeds will be donated to the Boys Lacrosse Program & 5 % will be donated to the Girls Lacrosse Program.
The Lt. Michael P. Murphy Museum hosted Sayville’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Athletics Helping Others Club.
They toured the museum, which pays tribute to one of our local heroes, and had meaningful discussions about leadership and character development.
Congratulations to Ward Melville track runners Anthony Anatol, Luke Jantzen, Jon Seyfert, and Andrew Senf, who ran at the New Balance Nationals in Boston and shattered the school record in the 4xMile with a blazing time of 17:51 (the previous record was 18:25)!

Congratulations to former longtime ADs Pat Smith and Georgia McCarthy for being recognized and inducted into the New York State Athletic Administrators Association Wall of Honor!
Smith served Smithtown and McCarthy in Huntington for many years.
They were honored at the most recent NYSAAA conference.
