East Islip’s Sebastian Regis Wins Hansen Award

The annual Suffolk County Football Coaches Association dinner put a cherry on top of an exciting 2023 football season.

East Islip’s Sebastian Regis won big as he was awarded the Carl A. Hansen Award as the top football player in Suffolk County. He’s the first lineman to earn the honor in 38 years. He also took home the Rob Burnett Award as the top defensive player and the Zellner Award as the top lineman.

Bayport-Blue Point, which finished 12-0 and won a Long Island championship, was honored with the Rutgers Trophy as the top team in the county.

Other honorees included:

  • Joe Filardi, Hills West: Boomer Esiason Award, top QB
  • Caden Lesiewicz, Floyd: Bryan Collins Award, top K

  • Jack Melore, Smithtown West: Paul Longo Award, top WR
  • Chris Pirapato, West Islip: Bob Collatta Award, top LB
  • Ben Ross, John Glenn: James LaBue award, top scholar-athlete
  • Kaeden West, Hills West: Thomas Cutinella Award
  • Mike Zafonte, Bayport-Blue Point: Fred Fusaro Award, top coach

Two from Section XI Run at Nike XC Nationals

Two talented runners from Section XI were in Oregon at the Nike Cross Country Nationals last week.

Bayport-Blue Point’s Sophia McInnes placed 42 out of 204 runners with a time of 18:32.

Bay Shore’s Jake Gogarty placed 123 out of 201 runners with a time of 16:38.

Great work, Sophia and Jake, and thanks for making Section XI and your respective school communities proud!

East Islip, Bayport-Blue Point Win Long Island Titles

Two of the four Section XI schools competing in the football Long Island championship games during the holiday weekend took home victories.

Congratulations to East Islip (Class III) and Bayport-Blue Point (Class IV) on their wins!

East Islip beat South Side, 19-14, at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium. The play of the game was a go-ahead score with 5:49 left when Thomas Costarelli threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Matt McIntee.

During the Class IV game, the Phantoms were led by Danny Aiello, who had 19 carries, 233 rushing yards, and 3 touchdowns in a 42-20 win over Seaford at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium.

Bayport-Bluepoint has a 23-game win streak – the longest in Suffolk County – and has won two consecutive Long Island crowns.
